Our Story
My gymnastics Story
Lia started her gymnastics career at age 6. Initially, she attended a recreation gym close to home, but moved to All Around gymnastics where she competed level 3, level 4, and the updated level 4. She later moved to Northwind Gymnastics, which is now Infinity Gymnastics, and found a better fit training under Elena Piskun and Inesa Shauroskaya. She competed level 6 (JO optionals) and was all around champion at most meets. At the 2015 State Meet, Lia was all around and bars champion. She advanced to level seven the following year where she also saw much success. At the 2016 State Meet, she was bars and floor champion, and placed 3rd all around. This qualified her for Regionals, and she was Regional all around and bars champion. The following year, she advanced to level 8 where she continued her passion for bars and floor. At the 2017 State Meet, she was floor champion and placed 3rd on bars. Advancing to Regionals, Lia placed 3rd on bars, 5th on floor, and 7th all around.
In level 9, 2018, Lia faced many injuries and adversities that caused her to miss months of training (an overuse elbow injury and a broken ankle). With these injuries occurring right before season, Lia was forced to sit out most of her first season of level 9. Even though she did not compete, she went to as many meets as she could and cheered on her teammates. In 2019, after rigorous training, she made a comeback and competed her first full season of level 9. In 2019 State Meet, Lia placed 5th all around and 5th on bars. This led her to qualify for level 9 Regionals. Currently, Lia McSweeney is training and competed level 10 for the 2020 season. She qualified for state but her season was cut short due to Covid-19.
Lia also started a big sister/little sister program at her gym. She came up with the idea and told her coaches. She soon got to work by creating the groups and coming up with activities to do outside of the gym. She did this in order to create a strong bond between everyone at the gym and wanted to give the lower level girls people to look up to and ask questions. She created this program in 2019, but events could not be scheduled because of Covid-19. For 2020, she has done an ice cream event, halloween event, and a gingerbread house making event. More information about this can be found on the "Leadership" tab.
Lia's academics
Lia McSweeney attends Cambridge High School in Milton, Georgia. She has a love for STEM related subjects. At an early age, she fell in love with computers and programming. Her high school offers a computer science pathway that Lia began in freshman year. She also joined BETA club, Bear Ambassadors (which leads new students around school), and FBLA (which stands for Future Business Leaders of America). At the end of freshman year, Lia was appointed a leadership position as treasurer in FBLA. She also completed 20 hours of community service for BETA club. During sophomore year, Lia helped her FBLA officer team and completed another 20 hours of community service. In her free time, she spends as much time as she can hanging out and doing fun activities with friends. She also enjoys playing computer games and making bracelets.
Throughout her rigorous gymnastics career, she was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA through her freshman and sophomore year. In her junior year, Lia is taking 3 AP classes, AP Chem, AP Computer Science A, AP Calculus BC, and Dual Enrollment English 1102. Freshman year, she was taking 10th grade classes/AP. Her sophomore year, she is taking 2 AP courses and 11th grade classes. Her long term goal is to obtain a division 1 college gymnastics scholarship at a college that focuses on academics and STEM.
Lastly, Lia competed in an FBLA event called Social Media Campaign. Her and her friends went to Regionals and got 1st. They also scored the highest score in the State. After regionals, Lia and her friends competed at the FBLA State competition.
